The key to it all is relationships

Understanding that a genuine desire to improve the quality of life for young people is not always enough. In addition a commitment to integrating new skills and strategies is essential to equip professionals with new tools to meet the ever changing needs of young people.

Research shows that in order for somebody to learn effectively their basic human needs must be met. These begin with the need for food, water and shelter. However as well as these needs the most successful learning facilitators recognize and actively meet learner’s needs for support and acceptance, challenge and appreciation, encouragement, respect and security.

In this way a safe learning environment is created where new levels of collaboration and respect exist between adult and learner. This in turn results in learners being able to access higher cognitive ability because brain function is not limited to ‘fight or flight’ responses.

Everybody has the potential to be a better learner. The key lies in unlocking potential through understanding and adopting Coaching values and principles and becoming proficient in the skills of active listening, questioning, and giving feedback and target setting.

As a result young people become more motivated, less challenging and better at learning. This in turn leads to raised self esteem and a better quality of life.
